Products & Performance
Thermally modified wood is natural wood enhanced through a controlled heat and steam process. The process changes how the wood responds to moisture, improving dimensional stability and durability without relying on traditional chemical preservatives.Â
Compared with standard kiln-dried wood, thermally modified wood absorbs less moisture and is less prone to swelling, shrinking, warping, twisting, and cupping. It also offers improved decay resistance in properly designed above-ground applications.
Common applications include exterior cladding, soffit, fascia, trim, decking, porch flooring, exterior millwork, and select interior walls and ceilings. Suitability depends on the species, profile, finish, installation method, exposure, and project conditions.
Common options may include Hemlock, Spruce, Southern Yellow Pine, and Paulownia, with other species available by request or current supply. Final species selection should be confirmed during estimating and physical sample approval.
Rustic Mix offers the greatest natural character, including mixed grain, knots, and color variation. Clear Mix provides a cleaner face while still allowing mixed grain. CVG, or Clear Vertical Grain, offers the most uniform vertical-grain appearance and is the most selective option. SYP, or Southern Yellow Pine, is a species group known for bold grain, warm color, and pronounced growth rings.
The approved physical sample establishes the project's color direction, but wood is a natural material. Variation in color, grain, texture, and finish absorption should be expected within an order and between separate production runs.
Yes. Exterior wood naturally changes with exposure and may gradually develop a silver-gray patina. South- and west-facing elevations typically weather faster, while shaded walls, soffits, and areas beneath deep overhangs may retain color longer.
Yes. Vintage Woods offers factory-applied finishes and a variety of standard and custom profiles, including shiplap, tongue-and-groove, square-edge, trim, and fascia profiles. Actual dimensions, coverage, reveal, and finish should be confirmed on the estimate and approved physical sample.
No. It should not be used in direct ground contact, continuously wet conditions, or assemblies that trap moisture. Proper drainage, ventilation, flashing, and clearance from moisture-prone surfaces remain essential.
Thermal modification can reduce certain strength properties. Any structural or load-bearing use should be reviewed and approved by the project's architect, engineer, or other qualified design professional.
Clear Mix and CVG are accumulated selections. Qualifying boards are collected from limited portions of the log over time, resulting in lower recovery, slower inventory accumulation, and higher relative pricing.
Ordering & Production
Vintage Woods recommends a 15-20% waste factor. The appropriate amount depends on the profile, board lengths, wall layout, openings, miters, specialty layouts, desired board selection, and project complexity.
Standard production is typically approximately 10 weeks after all production requirements are complete. Fire-rated orders typically require approximately 15 weeks. Actual timing should be confirmed on the estimate because availability, finish requirements, production scheduling, and project complexity can affect lead time.
Production begins after Vintage Woods receives the signed estimate, signed physical color sample, 50% deposit, and confirmed project quantities.
Yes, but add-on orders are not prioritized and may not match the original production run exactly. Ordering the appropriate waste factor with the original order helps prevent color variation and project delays.
Thermally modified wood and fire-rated wood are separate product categories. Fire-rated treatment is currently available for cladding and trim only; Vintage Woods does not currently offer fire-rated decking or fire-rated timbers.
Installation & Care
A properly detailed rainscreen or ventilated cavity is recommended whenever practical. Some code-compliant assemblies may be acceptable without a separate rainscreen when they are properly flashed and drained, allow drying, and provide solid wood backing for fasteners. Final wall design is the responsibility of the project's design and installation professionals.
Remove loose debris by hand, then use a leaf blower for dust and pollen or a soft-bristled brush for remaining surface debris. If water is necessary, use clean water only and allow the wood to dry naturally with good airflow.
Use corrosion-resistant fasteners suitable for exterior wood applications. Stainless steel is recommended for the best long-term appearance and performance. Fasteners must penetrate studs, blocking, or other solid backing - not sheathing alone - and heads should remain flush rather than overdriven.
Yes. All field cuts, rips, notches, drilled holes, and exposed end grain should be sealed with an approved finish or end-seal product.
Maintain at least a 1-inch gap above roofing, flashing, decks, concrete, stone, and other horizontal surfaces where water can collect. At slab-on-grade conditions, a 3- to 5-inch clearance is recommended. Additional clearance may be needed in areas exposed to snow, splashback, or repeated wetting.
Store material flat, dry, covered, ventilated, and elevated off the ground. Protect it from rain, snow, standing water, mud, jobsite damage, and prolonged direct sun. Do not completely seal bundles in plastic, and allow the material to acclimate before installation.
No. High-pressure water can damage wood fibers, disturb the finish, force water into joints and end grain, and create an uneven surface texture. Avoid bleach, ammonia, abrasive pads, harsh chemicals, and aggressive cleaners as well.
There is no universal recoating schedule. Inspect exterior wood at least once per year and recoat when the finish shows visible fading, dryness, or uneven wear. High-exposure elevations may need attention sooner than shaded or protected areas.
Contact Vintage Woods before using a third-party coating. Incompatible products can cause uneven color, adhesion problems, sheen differences, and future maintenance issues.
